WHEN picking a grand champion female in the Australian Shorthorn ring, judge Andrew Chapman, Calliope, Qld, reminded spectators “the best looking females don’t always make the best cookies”.
And while he appreciated both the junior and senior champion, exhibited by Scott Bruton, Lake Boga, Victoria, it was the five week old heifer calf on Morningtime Roan 0919 that got the cow over the line.
Morningtime Roan 0919 was purchased as a calf on its mother from David Ashley’s Morningtime stud, Elingamite, Victoria.
Mr Bruton said the foundation of his Australian Shorthorn herd came from the Morningtime stud, and this cow had been producing “handy calves”.
Junior champion female, Roly Park Kath, had the length of body, topline, volume, thickness and feminine attributed that judge Mr Chapman was looking for in the breed.
