HAHNDORF'S Carlton Shorthorns went back-to-back in the Adelaide Shorthorn ring, taking out the supreme Shorthorn exhibit for the second year running.
Stud principals Lyn and John Nitschke must have felt a strange sense of deja vu as the performance was repeated with an animal which first won the junior and grand champion bull titles for the breed.
The 760-kilogram Carlton Knight first staked its claim in the 16 to 18 months bull class.
By Yamburgan Ossie and from Carlton Queen Melba 9th, the bull was a full sibling to last year's reserve junior champion heifer and had an eye muscle area of 125 square centimetres with rib and rump fats of nine and 10 millimetres.
Judge David Greenup, Rosevale Santa Gertrudis, Jandowae, Qld, said the bull was a standout with "balance in a high performance package".
"And he stacked up visually too," he said.
"This bull has the force we're looking for in a cracking package."
Mr Greenup said both of his grand champions were "gutsy, practical types of animal" which he believed would "do the job".
The grand champion female also came from the junior ranks and kicked off a stellar day for the Ashby family of Bundaleer Shorthorns, Gulnare.
Bundaleer Summerton K83, the youngest female of the breed, caught the judge's eye as the first animal to enter the ring for the day in the heifer 10 to 14 months class.
By United States sire Waukaru Patent 8161 and from Bundaleer Summerton E13, the junior female fended off competition from the senior champion female Windsor Northern Rocky Road, exhibited by Golding Pastoral's Windsor Shorthorns, Hahndorf.
The senior champion bull was Belmore Salvo J220 exhibited by Andy and Sally Withers, Belmore Shorthorns, Naracoorte.
Hitting the scales at 895kg, the winner of the 24 to 30 months bull class had an EMA of 122 sq cm and rib and rump fats of 5mm and 8mm.
