'CONSIDER Coolana' is a promotional slogan used by Coolana Angus stud principals Mark and Anna Gubbins, and buyers certainly did that at its recent annual spring bull sale at Chatsworth, Vic.
Despite the absence of a key regular top-end volume client because of seasonal effects, the 43 registered buyers competed consistently and strongly. As a result, the top price reached $10,500, up $2500 on last year in a total clearance of the 57 bulls averaging an outstanding $5142.
The bulls were presented in paddock-raised condition, showing the benefits of an earlier opening and good winter pasture growth.
Six bulls that had been used in the Coolana breeding program were offered first and Pardoo Cattle Co through Elders Mortlake, Vic, snapped up four from $6000 to $8500.
The $10,500 top was for Coolana Infinity H325. Sired by Coolana Infinity E56 he had balanced figures right across the board with growth figures topping at +116 for 600-day weight. They later added another for $4500, to average $7333 for their six purchases.
Dick Whale, bidding for Allhill Pty Ltd, Corowa, NSW, paid the sale's second top price of $9500 in their two purchases. This was for Coolana Africa H086, also with great figures highlighted by an EMA EBV of 7.2. A feature of all the TeMania Africa A217 sons, including H086, is their extreme docility.
Woorabinda Pastoral Co, through Elders Mortlake was a strong buyer, picking up four bulls from $5000 to $6500. Steve McLeod, Leaella Partnership, Macarthur, NSW, a regular buyer at Coolana, took three from $5000 to $7000.
J&J Glare, through SKB Rodwells Warrnambool, Vic, took three from $4500 to $6000. Kilkenny Pastoral Co, through Kerr & Co Hamilton, Vic, also bought three from $5000 to $7500.
P&M Ewing through Elders Mortlake, Vic, paid $3000 to $5000 for three.
Linlithgow Plains, Dunkeld, Vic, a regular volume buyer at Coolana, had a field day on the lower-budget bulls. Manager Graeme Steff assisted by Joseph Cardwell, took 11 to be easily the biggest volume buyer, paying an average of $3818, ranging from $3000 to $5500.
