JUST like sport stars, agriculture is providing mentors for young women, according to Agriculture Minister Leon Bignell.
Speaking before the launch of the Women Influencing Agribusiness and Regions Strategy in Adelaide last week, he said the program "allows us to celebrate and promote the role women play in agribusiness right across SA".
The strategy will start by highlighting 11 women who are achieving in a range of roles, citing them as role models for the next generation.
A partnership between women in industry, community and government, through PIRSA, the strategy aims to promote opportunities, grow capabilities and break down barriers.
Mr Bignell said the strategy builds on work already being done.
"It coordinates the range of programs, including skills training and promoting career paths, that will help women make informed choices about getting involved in the state's agricultural industries," he said.
"We all know how important agribusiness is in SA's economy.
"We know women are out there doing these jobs and playing leading roles in these sectors, so we're taking that (to) spread the word throughout the student community and SA, giving (women) something to aim at."
The 11 women included cheesemaker Kris Lloyd, who described it as a "very exciting initiative".
"Lots of jobs in agribusiness are seen as more suited to males, and I am the perfect example that's not true," she said.
"It's not always glamorous, but the career I've been able to have, working alongside farmers, has been amazing."
